The only restriction is that your BMW must be equipped with Comfort Access from the factory or retrofitted by an authorized BMW dealer. When you're ready for setting up a brand new BMW Digital Key, start by making sure your smartphone is fully charged and located in the same space as your vehicle. Place your iPhone in the tray for your smartphone and then click "Start pairing" from the BMW Connected App on your vehicle. Once your phone has been paired with your vehicle, you can take the iPhone from the tray.
If you're ready to add additional users, simply log into your BMW Connected account and select 'Add New Digital Key'. Battery Replacement
If the batteries on your BMW key fob are running out and you're thinking, "Can I replace the battery on a BMW fob?" The answer to this depends on the type of BMW fob you own. The older diamond-shaped BMW fobs, for example are not made to be battery replaced. They are glued to the backplate and prying off the backplate could do some damage to the fob. However, the latest fobs can get their batteries replaced by opening the key fob and swapping out the CR2450 or CR2032 battery.
For the more well-known smart key models (like those in the 1, 3, 5, 7 and X series), you can press a small tab to remove the valet key made of metal and then open the access port by using a screwdriver or another thin tool. This should reveal a small groove. Use the tool to push the tab in and pull off the valet key to reveal the CR2032 battery inside. You'll need to take another method for a Display key with touchscreen. The Display Key is water resistant but it is not waterproof like an ordinary fob.
